Easter is great fun for kids. With Easter egg hunts, the Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs, it's easy to see why they just love Easter.

But the real meaning of Easter is not about Easter eggs, bunny rabbits and chocolate. Easter is the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a very important date on the Christian calendar. Easter marks the end of a 40 day period of fasting, which begins on Ash Wednesday. This period is Lent. The week before Easter is Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday and includes Maundy Thursday (the day of the Last Supper), Good Friday (the day of Christ’s crucifixion) and Holy Saturday (the time between the crucifixion and resurrection).

So what's Easter got to do with eggs, you ask?  Eggs are associated with Easter because eggs were forbidden during Lent. If there were any eggs left, they would be consumed before Lent, on Shrove Tuesday. Eggs collected during the period of Lent would then be eaten at Easter. Eggs are also associated with Easter because they are a symbol of fertility and rebirth, linking them to the resurrection of Jesus.
