When is Valentines Day

Valentines Day is February 14.

Valentines Day was first associated with romantic love in the middle ages during the time of Geoffrey Chaucer, the Father of English Literature and the greatest poet during that time. This was the time when the tradition of courtly love started to flourish, and later evolved into a tradition of giving flowers, greeting cards and confectionery.

Did you know that Valentine was a Roman priest who defied the Roman Emperor who decided to outlaw marriage for young men as he decided single men would make better soldiers. The priest was caught marrying couples and he refused to denounce his Christian faith and was imprisoned. While in prison, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter who visited him in prison. He sent her a letter before his execution and signed it "From your Valentine", an expression commonly used today on Valentines Day. Sadly, Valentine was executed on 14 February, 269 AD. Around 496 AD, the Pope declared February 14 a day to honor Valentine and it was only much later in the 14th century that it became a celebration of romantic love.
