Its history dates back to the early gold-mining days of Victoria where they were used to contain provisions imported from overseas. They were found to be a very handy size and, when empty, many found use as water-boiling vessels. Thus the 'Billy' was gradually introduced into general use as kettles and teapots. The billy is not at its best until it becomes stained and blackened with usage. Billy-boilng contests used to be popular in the Australian bush and the older the billy the quicker it boils!
