In 1958, a woman by the name of Barbara Sansoni decided she would help the young Sri Lankan women who had no schooling and no skills. As a colourist and artist, she was able to use her own skills to set up BAREFOOT. Today, she has achieved that goal successfully. Today, BAREFOOT is a premier textile design company exporting products to other parts of the world.
All BAREFOOT products are fully handmade from beginning to end. The yarn is hand dyed, using premium Swiss colourfast and non-toxic dyes, then handwoven and fashioned into various products. The high quality workmanship is assured, as there is no time pressures on the weavers and needlewomen. They are not cheap substitutes for machinery, which is why BAREFOOT products cost what they do, however, they will last a lifetime. BAREFOOT products are not mass-produced and no two pieces are the same.
BAREFOOT is not a charity organisation. The workers receive an honest wage in exchange for the work that they do. Through BAREFOOT, under the Fair Trade Program, they are able to support themselves and their children thus acquiring dignity and self-respect.
