Knowing how to care, clean and handle your silverware and silverplated objects will keep it looking its finest at all times. Many silver plated products are copper/bronze based. Like all silver products, tarnishing will occur over time. The process of tarnishing is the result of the combination of moisture, sulfur and other chemicals in the air, with the natural acids, salts and oils from the skin. Tarnish which is silver sulfide is first visible on silver as a yellowish cast which over time deepens to brown and eventually becomes a very dark and iridescent purple/black. Tarnish does not actually ruin these silver objects. Damage to silver occurs usually as a result of polishing which removes layers of silver with each polish.The best care, handling and cleaning method to use is:1. Use a clean cotton cloth when handling silver and silver plated objects to avoid having to frequently clean them.2. Avoid touching silver and silver plated objects with sweaty hands.3. It is far better to clean your silver plated objects when the tarnish is light than if tarnish is dark.4. You can clean each silver plated object with lemon or vinegar, rinse well with clean water, dry with a clean cotton cloth and air dry in direct sunlight. This method is suitable when the silver plated object is dull and not tarnished in spots. Drying in direct sunlight ensures that no moisture is left. It also increases the shine on the silver.Note: Conventional silver cleaners, silver plating solutions or silver polishing cloths are not recommended. Many of them can be abrasive and may strip the silver off. They may also cause discoloration which may sometimes be irreversible.These silver plated objects have a black powder on them which makes the relief on the objects more prominent. Ifthe powder gets on your hands or clothing, simply wash with soap and water to remove the stain. If there is too much powder residue on the silver plated object, wipe with a clean dry cloth.
