Silver was used during this time by royalty and the upper class for religious ceremonies, funerals and other rituals. It was during this era that silversmiths emerged south of the ancient royal port of Oudong which was the capital of Cambodia, and they were supported by the Cambodian Royal Palace. In 1866, King Norodom moved the Royal Palace to Phnom Penh which then became the official capital of Cambodia a year later.Today, silversmiths in Cambodia who survived the Pol Pot regime continue to practice their skills, using traditional tools that have remained relatively unchanged.
