Biplanes were amongst the first types of aircraft and were flown extensively in the first world war. In the early years of aviation, the Wright brothers' Wright Flyer used a biplane design, as did most aircraft. If you know about biplanes, these planes whilst having a high degree of structural rigidity, produced more drag than monoplane wings. With more air resistance, this was a serious disadvantage. By the late 1930s with innovations in structural techniques and new materials available, biplanes soon were superceded by monoplanes. Today biplanes tend to be used for recreation such as acrobatics.Famous biplanes include the Sopwith Camel, Antonov An-2, Beechcraft Staggerwing, Boeing Stearman, Bristol Bulldog, Curtiss JN-4, de Havilland Tiger Moth, Fairey Swordfish, Pitts Special and the Wright Flyer. The Stearman is particularly associated with stunt flying with wing-walkers.If you love biplanes, see our biplanes collection.
