The platypus is a unique Australian animal. It has a soft duck bill , broad tail and webbed feet for swimming. An adult platypus measures 45 cm to 60 cm in length and may weigh up to 2.7 kg. The females are generally smaller than males. It is usually deep brown in colour on the back and sides of the head, body and upper surfaces of the limbs. The underside is a golden colour although silky grey is not uncommon. They have a thick waterproof outercoat of fur and a grey woolly underfur to provide insulation. The fur on the broad flat tail is coarse and bristly. The platypus is widespread in eastern Australia and can be found in rivers and streams.
