White Crane & Pelican- Muramura Dreaming Aboriginal Art

Medium: acrylic on stretched canvas - ready for wall hanging This canvas represents the landscape around Cooper Creek of the Lake Eyre region as seen by the Muramura - a spirit person who can travel all over the land. The Muramuras made toas [like direction posts] that outlined the landscape they had travelled - similar to a topographical map. This particular area is where the Muramura noticed a white Crane and Pelican on Cooper Creek. ABOUT THE ARTIST Michael J. Connolly is an Aboriginal from Charleville, south west Queensland and a descendant of the Kullilla tribe from the Thargomindah/Eulo region [on his father's side] and from the Muruwari People from Goodooga/Brewarrina region of north-west New South Wales [on his mother's side] who can trace their traditional trade and diplomatic links with Central Desert as well as South Australian and Northern New South Wales' Aboriginal Communities. His work has been exhibited in the Trevenen House Gallery at New Farm, attended by Federal Members of Parliament, displayed and acknowledged at the Indigenous Art Pavilion at the Brisbane Goodwill Games in August 2001 and also in various galleries in and around Brisbane, Queensland. Apart from his works of art and craft, Michael is an accomplished didgeridoo player and has performed for the High Commissioner in Brunei, Worldwide Aussie Convention in Brisbane for the Northern Territory Tourist Commission and for the President of Ireland at the Brisbane Convention Centre. The sound of his didgeridoo has been incorporated into the music of the Queensland Irish Pipe Band - a truly magical blend - given Michael's heritage as half Irish / half aboriginal. Michael has also performed at various corporate and Government functions. He has been invited to perform with the Maltese National Orchestra in Malta for their 40th anniversary of Independence Day Concert before The Princess Royal HRH Princess Anne, the President of Malta, the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and several hundred guests at the Grand Palace. He was also part of the anniversary celebrations held in September 2004 courtesy of the Australian Deparment of Foreign Affairs & Trade. Michael's collection of Indigenous artworks has also been seen at the St James Cavalier Centre. His performing travels has taken him even to the Mumbai [Bombay] International Film Festival as part of AusArts India as well as the launch of the Australia International Cultural Council in Kolkata [Calcutta]. He was recently invited by Discovery Channel to play for the launch of the new Discovery Atlas Channel, showcasing Australia's Aboriginal Culture. It is Michael's ambition in life to take his Kullilla elders 'home' and to continue the culture of his tribe. Through engendering respect for the Aboriginal heritage, he can continue his lifelong work to encourage the younger generation to learn and practice their culture - and more importantly, to stop the exploitation and imitation of the art, the culture and heritage of his people.
